Wenesday, January 23, Into Thin Air

Objective:By the end of class, students will read and interpret Into thin Air, identify cause and effect and complete cause / effect essay.

When it was evident that Hansen could not get down the Hillary Step, the team below suggested Hall leave him and save himself.  Hall chose to stay with Hansen.  what would you have done and why?

Together, list  all of the mistakes made so far on the 1996 fatal climb.

Complete reading Into thin Air - pages - 359-362.  Addto list of "mistakes" as we read.

Guided 

Choose one of the mistakes (causes) that we listed. Use the graphic organizer to determine all of the effects that occurred from that mistake.

Use the graphic organizer to turn this into a three paragraph cause / effect essay.

Example:

Opening paragraph - Into Thin Air is a true account of the events that occurred on Mount Everest in May 1996. Many bad decisions were made during that climb and 8 people lost their lives. One bad decision that was made was when .........

Paragraph 2 - explain the effects of the bad decision (cause)

Conclusion - suggest other possible outcomes if a different decision (cause) occurred. What may have happened differently?
