Monday, December 18 - Poetry / Song Project contniued

Objective: By the end of this project, students will produce a power point presentation analyzing figurative language and theme in poetry in order to improve comprehensive skills.

DO NOW - This is an example for how to cite a source for SLIDE 5 - you will do this for the artist or poet for the poem or song that you are analyzing.

LOG ONTO my blog - reinaeng2.blogspot.com

Open another tab and log onto KNIGHTCITE. The URL for it is:

https://www.calvin.edu/library/knightcite/index.php

When you go to Knight cite, on the left column, make sure MLA format is checked and then go to bottom of page and click "website document." (we normally use easybib.com but they are starting to charge $$ to use their site!)

OPEN ANOTHER TAB and open to a biography of your artist or poet. my example will be Edgar Allan Poe.

Copy the URL for the POE site and paste where it says "Website Title."

Put the title of the document where it says "Document title."

Fill in any other information you might have such as author and/or date published.

Hit " SUBMIT"

5. Cut and paste the citation to your resource page ( in this case, to your 5th slide) - Obviously you are not using POE. That was just my example.

It should look like this:

“Edgar Allan Poe.” Biography.com, A&E Networks Television, 2 Aug. 2017, www.biography.com/people/edgar-allan-poe-9443160.

Direct Instruction

Introduce Shakespeare's Seven Ages of Man from the play, "As You Like it."

It is an EXTENDED METAPHOR - An extended metaphor, is when an author takes a single metaphor (a comparison without using "like" or "as"), and stretches it out over the whole poem or story.

listen one more time

Shakespeare was most famous for writing plays (dramas) that were either tragedies or comedies. All plays are divided into ACTS aand then into smaller SCENES within the ACTS. It only makes sense then, that Shakespeare compares the seven stages of life to seven _________ in a play.

THIS IS THE EXTENDED METAPHOR - STAGES OF LIFE ARE COMPARED TO ACTS IN A PLAY.

Read and Annotate the poem for figurative language.
Metaphor
Simile
Alliteration
personification
Parallelism

Identify the seven stages of man directly on the poem.
