Wednesday, September 30 - Lamb to the Slaughter

Objective: By the end of class, students will identify irony in short fiction and create plot structure in order to improve reading comprehension.

DO NOW - Identify which kid of irony applies to each of the below scenerios:
1. You are failing and I tell you "GOOD JOB!" - this is an example of  what kind of irony?
2. If you have been getting A's all semester and then you fail a test, that is what kind of irony?
3. You are watching a movie and a murderer is in the attic when the family gets home from dinner on a Saturday night.

Direct Instruction

Read pages 319 and 320 together. Make predictions.

Identify one instance of dramatic irony and one instance of situational so far.

Discuss the plot structure graphic organizer - Definitions of each part are on the back of the diagram if you have forgotten. Why should we consider Mary as the PROTAGONIST and Patrick as the ANTAGONIST.

Wednesday, September 30 - Characterization

Objective: By the end of class, students will determine character traits by analyzing direct and indirect characterization in order to improve reading comprehensive skills.

DO NOW 

WRITE THE DEFINITION in your Notebooks:

To  EVALUATE = to form an idea about something by analyzing information. When evaluating, you do the same thing as analyzing, except at the end, add your OPINION.

 What is your character? Use a NEO if you'd like to answer the following in at 2-3 well- written paragraphs:

Evaluate the tragic situation of September 11, 2001. What might you have done if you were left there on your own? 

THEN:

EVALUATE yourself / your character. List 5 character traits that you think you possess. Consider what you say, think, do and look. What have you done or said in your life so far to confirm these character traits about yourself? Do you think most people would agree (how do they describe you)?

Tuesday, September 29 - Analyze /Evaluate 102 minutes

Objective: By the end of class, students will practice analyzing and evaluating in order to improve reading comprehensive skills.


DO NOW

Explain the differences between dramatic, situational and verbal ironies. What must happen in order to have verbal irony? 

Direct Instruction

Collect HW - tear HW out from soft holt reader, be sure to put your name on it and staple. I will collect after class.

Review LTTS multiple choice test and constructed responses. FORMAT: Restate, explain/ discuss, quote conclude. If you did not write the whole prompt down, then restating and answering all parts of the question obviously was impossible.

Left on Your Own is the main idea of the HW passage, From 102 Minutes." Answer the following in constructed response format.

1. After reading "From 102 Minutes:," analyze how the importance of human life brought together three very different individuals -  marine, a recovering addict and an accountant  - who worked together to save lives in a tragic situation.

a. Restate
b. Explain (discuss their different backgrounds / possibly how they would never meet if not faced with tragedy)
c. Quote (one or two from that support how they worked together without question).
d. Conclude - go back to the prompt and make sure all parts of questions answered.

2. Evaluate (provide your opinion) the tragic situation; what might you have done if you were there, left on your own.

1. Do you think Mary committed a crime of passion, is insane, or is a cold-blooded killer that premeditated the whole murder? Use the handout and find evidence for each one from the text.  This means find an exact quote that supports each one. 

2. Now choose ONE that you believe to be true. Pretend you are either Mary's defense attorney or you are the prosecuter trying to convict Mary of cold-blooded murder. You are giving your closing argument to the jury. Use the evidence from the text to support your argument! Either use a NEO or write on the back of the handout.

Friday, September 11 - How to Analyze and Find Main Idea

Objective: By the end of class, students will learn how to analyze and find main idea in different genres in order to improve reading comprehension skills.

DO NOW

Take out soft holt reader and complete the "MAIN IDEA" and supporting details on page 49 (NOT page 48). While you are doing this I will check to see if you completed sidebars for homework.

Direct Instruction

Review sidebars and answers to DO NOW.

SHORT QUIZ ON FINDING MAIN IDEA. 6 multiple choice questions - 5 points each (total of 30 points).

When finished, write the following definition and steps in your notebooks:

TO ANALYZE - to break down information, pick it apart and determine why the parts are important to the whole.

Steps to ANALYZE and write a Constructed Response:

1. Restate the prompt/question to create opening sentence.
2. Discuss / explain in your own words.
3. Provide detailed evidence (A QUOTE!!) to support your idea.
4. Conclude by restating to ensure that you have correctly answered the prompt / question. and add any final thought or explanation.

Direct / Guided Instruction - we will review the following examples together before you try to do it on your own.

PROMPT / EXAMPLE #1:
Analyze how Jane Goodall's observations of chimpanzees resulted in National Geographic agreeing to further fund her research.

1. Jane Goodall's observations of chimpanzees resulted in National Geographic agreeing to further fund her research. 

2. Goodall observed chimpanzees in the Gombe Stream Reserve in Tanzania and discovered that they ate meat and could actually make tools!  

3. Goodall observed "the female pick up a piece of the pink flesh and put it in her mouth:" She also saw one another chimp eating termites and using a grass stem. "It as obvious that he was actually using the grass stem as a tool."

4. These observations were new and very exciting. Maybe there was more to learn about these intelligent animals. Jane Goodall's observations resulted in National Geographic providing funds so that Goodall could continue her work to find out more.


PROMPT / EXAMPLE # 2

ANALYZE the uncle's positive attitude in "My First Baseball Game" and explain its effect on the narrator and Felicia.

1. The uncle in "My First Baseball Game" has a positive attitude that affects the narrator an Felicia.  

2. Even though the cubs lost 7-0, he was very positive and hopeful that the next game they would win. 


3. The uncle said, "..every game we hope, and we don't abandon hope, that's loyalty. It's about supporting your team no matter what." 


4. His positive attitude about the losing baseball team makes the kids realize how important being loyal and sticking together is no matter what.


Now you try on your own: Write on the back of the graphic organizer you just used.


Analyze how, according to Felicia's comments,  the baseball team is very much like a big family.

Closure

Review all Keystone terminology introduced to date and review how to find main idea. Emphasize difference between analyzing and summarizing.
