Wednesday, October 5 - The Lottery Continued....Characterization / POV / Irony

Objective: By the end of class, students will use active reading strategies and inferencing in order to improve reading comprehensive skills.

DO NOW

By looking at the quotes you circled already read on page 3, List three character traits for the VILLAGERS in general  / And how do you know (STEAL).

Direct Instruction

Look at character traits and how we have learned about the crowd and specific characters including Tessie Hutchinson and Mr. Summers and Mr.Graves.

Look back at the text and tell me - Do we ever know what any of the characters are thinking or feeling directly?

SUBJECTIVE point of view is a personal view or opinion.

OBJECTIVE means FAIR.

OBJECTIVE Point of View gives only facts and is like videoing the events with no opinion. You can see what people say, do, their effect on others and how they look but you will not know what they think. You an only infer that.

SUBJECTIVE VS OBJECTIVE POV

ALERT - PLEASE RENUMBER PAGES WITH ME!
 PAGE 5  = PAGE 4
PAGE 4  = PAGE 5

Read together next page THAT STARTS WITH "CLARK...DELACROIX"

 – annotate – take note of how we learn about characters through this dialogue (indirect characterization use graphic organizer) and how that connects with 3rd objective narrator.

Independent

Read next page (THAT STARTS WITH "WATSON" THE TALL BOY CAME AWKWARDLY..."on own or in pairs.
Annotate and do a character trait sheet for Old Man Warner. (what he says, how he looks , what he does and/or his effects on others).

Answer the comprehensive questions below (also handed out). You will find ALL the answers to these questions on the two pages we read today.

1. What is ironic about old man Warner's statement that they if they get rid of the lottery, "they'll go back to living in caves......"

2. What does it say about tradition in this village when old man Warner says, "pack of young fools!" Also, the Adams couple talk about other villages talking about giving up the lottery.

3. What is old man Warner's  best reason for continuing the lottery? Is there logic in this reasoning? Explain.

4. Why is the Watson boy drawing for his mother and what might make him "awkward" and "nervous"? What might you infer happened to his father?

5. What family "won" the lottery?

6. Why does Mrs Hutchinson scream "it wasn't fair?" How is her behavior ironic (go back and look at  the character traits we gave her at bottom of 2nd page).

6. What can you infer about Bill Hutchinson when he tells Tessie to "shut up?"

8. How many children do Bill and Tessie Hutchinson have? Name them. (read the second half of page 5 carefully).
