Thursday - Characterization - Everyday Use

Objective: By the end of class, students will analyze character in short fiction in order to improve reading comprehension.

Maintaining one's heritage is important in a fast-paced, growing society and world. How do you keep up with the modern world yet hold onto family or racial culture? Do you or your family do anything to maintain tradition in a changing world?

Complete sidebars. Also determine setting (where, what time frame and how do you know), protagonist and antagonist.

Independent

Complete a character trait sheet (double-sided) for one of the characters (Dee, Maggie or the mother) of the story. Be sure to note the page number and quote that reveals the character traits that you choose on each line and also say if it is direct or indirect characterization.

Check for understanding

Review traits and share -write on board with page numbers.

Closure

Review how character traits are revealed.
