Wednesday, September15 - IRONY and Characterization

Objective: By the end of class, students will continue to practice finding the main idea and identify different types of irony in order to recognize in literature and improve reading comprehensive skills.

Three types of irony:

1. Dramatic Irony 
2. Situational Irony
3. Verbal Irony




Independent / Guided

Irony worksheet - identify and explain why each is irony and why it is verbal, situational or dramatic. Underline or highlight the words in the passage that suggest irony.



Your vocabulary words for this week are on page 316. Write a sentence using context clues for the words in your notebooks. If you prefer, you can write a short story using 5 of the seven words.

1. You are failing and I tell you "GOOD JOB!" - this is an example of  what kind of irony?

2. If you have been getting A's all semester and then you fail a test, that is what kind of irony?

3. You are watching a movie and a murderer is in the attic when the family gets home from dinner on a Saturday night.
