Thursday, December 13, Vietnam / Short Fiction

OBJECTIVE: By the end of class, students will read short fiction and demonstrate comprehension by answering CRQ's.  Students will also practice homonyms for quiz on Friday.

Write sentences for the first three sets of homonyms on the handout provided.

Review questions
From your reading yesterday, Charming Billy:

1. How long has Paul Berlin been in Vietnam?
2. Why are th other soldiers annoyed with him?
3. What did Berlin see that he can't get out of his mind?
4. What does Berlin visualize to try to forget he is in a war?
5. Did he think he was going to be so terrified?
6. Why does he say he won't tell his Dad that he was so afraid?
7. What does he think will happen when they reach the coast?    
 
  Finish reading Billy - pages - 624-626.

Summarize the story in a clear, concise short essay - three paragraphs on NEO.  First paragraph can explain Berlin's initial fear in the war, second, the importance of not appearing afraid to his father and finally the irony of his laughter at Billy Boy being scared to death.

Critical thinking questions - 2-6 on page 630.
