When summarizing - be sure to tell WHO, WHAT, WHERE, WHEN AND WHY.  You should not include very specific details or quotes from the text.

When analyzing or writing a constructed response - DEFINITELY INCLUDE DETAILS AND QUOTES FROM TEXT to support your ideas.

Choose a deadly famous RIOT in history ( When Julius Caesar was killed, when Martin Luther King was killed, etc) and research it. A list of riots can be found at click here.

Then write a summary.  Be sure to explain what incited the riot. WHO, WHAT, WHERE, WHEN AND WHY SHOULD ALL QUESTIONS THAT ARE ANSWERED IN YOUR SHORT ESSAY.

Read Nixon's speech. Make notes, connotations and underline important facts / events / ideas. Then, on a separate piece of paper, or a NEO, explain the following in a contructed response format - minimum 6 sentences.

OBJECTIVE: By the end of class, students will read short fiction and demonstrate comprehension by answering CRQ's.  Students will also practice homonyms for quiz on Friday.

Write sentences for the first three sets of homonyms on the handout provided.

From your reading yesterday, Charming Billy:

1. How long has Paul Berlin been in Vietnam?
2. Why are th other soldiers annoyed with him?
3. What did Berlin see that he can't get out of his mind?
4. What does Berlin visualize to try to forget he is in a war?
5. Did he think he was going to be so terrified?
6. Why does he say he won't tell his Dad that he was so afraid?
7. What does he think will happen when they reach the coast?    
 
  Finish reading Billy - pages - 624-626.

Summarize the story in a clear, concise short essay - three paragraphs on NEO.  First paragraph can explain Berlin's initial fear in the war, second, the importance of not appearing afraid to his father and finally the irony of his laughter at Billy Boy being scared to death.

Answer the following CRQ's on NEOS.

1. Why did the soldiers move silently in single file at night in Vietnam? (page 622)
2. Why do you think the other soldier spoke so harshly to Berlin? (pge 622)
3. Provide examples of imagery used on page 623 that make the reader feel "as if he/she are there."
 4. What is the primary emotion of Berlin?
5. How does the tone of the story change when Berlin imagines how things will be when they reach the coast?
6. Look at the statistics on page 624. Why did the war become progressively less popular in the US?
7. How do we know, from the stats, that the Vietnam still plays an important role in the lives of Americans today?

Objective: By the end of class, you will use the "describe a feeling" questionnaire you completed last Thursday and create an original poem using imagery and three more of the five poetic devices - hyperbole, alliteration, metaphor, simile, personification.  Students will also create a visual of this poem, using the questionnare as a guideline.

DO NOW

HOMONYMS - words that sound the same and are spelled the same but have different meanings

BEAR (n) - the animal
BEAR (v) - to be able to tolerate

BEAM (v) - smiling excessively / VERY happy
BEAM (n) - a long plank - a beam that is used in building a house / or a balance beam in gymnastics

WRITE sentences for each of the four words.


Direct Instruction

Review your "questonnaire." Using powerpoint, one one slide, write a ten line original poem about the feeling you described using imagery and three of the five other poetic devices - hyperbole, allitration, metaphor, simile and/ or personification. Be sure to spell check!!

Then, on another slide, create a visual representation of your poem using a minimum of six images or symbols.

Email or share with me on google docs so I can print and display.

Objective: By the end of class, students will create two power point slides according to guidelines  and print them to demonstrate comprehension of symbols and allegory.  Student will also practice new vocabulary / grammar.
