Monday, April 21 - Poetry / Sonnet

Objective: By the end of class, students will review poetic devices and analyze Shakespearean sonnet in order to develop new vocabulary  and distinguish between different types of poems.

Direct Instruction

Guided

Analyze "Shall I compare Thee to A Summer's Day."

Independent

1. Label the Quatrains (three sets of four lines - be sure to notice that there are 10 syllables in each line)
2. Label the Rhyme scheme
2. Identify the couplet.
4. Interpret each line and translate into your own words (you do not have to rhyme).


Closure

Review elements of different types of poems (Prose, figurative, imagery, sonnet, etc).  To remember what a couplet is, think of "couple" meaning "two." Two lines of poetry, 10 syllables each with END rhyme.
