Thursday, February 5, Vocabulary and Active Reading Strategies

Objective: By the end of class, you will be introduced to finding the main idea and using Active Reading Strategies in order to improve reading comprehension skills necessary for all aspects of academia and employment.

DO NOW 

Vocabulary Quiz from Syllabus. You may use your notebooks. Define the following words and write one sentence for each using context clues.  (5 point each = 25 points).

Direct Instruction


 Review how find the MAIN IDEA (handout)

MAIN IDEA= TOPIC + AUTHOR's POINT about the topic. It is usually found in the first or last sentence of a paragraph.

Main idea handout. Read directions and example.

Guided 

Stress and your brain

As you watch video, write down the TOPIC, MAIN IDEA and two  DETAILS/EXAMPLES that support your main idea.

Independent

Use active reading strategies while reading In the Shadow of  Man - pages 41-47 - soft holt reader. You will be seeking the main ideas of paragraphs and ultimately the whole passage. 

ANNOTATE and complete all sidebars. Then complete pages 48-49 to practice identifying main idea and supporting details. You MAY write in the book.

Individual student checks during independent work.

Closure

Review active reading strategies and finding main idea

Discuss SUMMARIZING main idea of a story or article.

Exit Pass

In your own words, summarize In the Shadow of Man. If you did not complete reading it, write down the page number you read to and summarize to that point (who, what, when, where and why).
