Thursday, January 31st, Current Event Summaries / Predictions

Objective:By the end of class, students will be able to analyze non-fiction, make predictions and use laptops to create summaries and visual collages for choice board topics.


DO NOW

What are the top three sources that you use to get find out what is going on in the world? What subject matter interests you most? Why?


DIRECT INSTRUCTION

We read, summarized  and predicted for fiction with ambiguious endings, non-fiction unsolved mysteries and now we will d othe same for current events.

Go to my blog - reinaeng2.blogspot.com. 

From either the CNN OR USA TODAY websites, choose an article. On powerpoint, create ONLY TWO slides:

1. Summarize the article (who, what, when , where, why).

     a. Make a prediction - what might happen next? What are possible long term effects of   what happened?
    b. Why did you choose this article?

2. Create a visual for your article. Use photos, images, symbols and text to support your summary and prediction.

Wednesday, January 30, Unsolved Mysteries

Objective:By the end of class, students will be able to analyze non-fiction, IDENTIFY IRONY, make predictions and use laptops to create summaries and visual collages for choice board topics.


DO NOW

WHAT IS IRONIC ABOUT EACH OF THE FOLLOWING STATEMENTS?
  • An oral contract isn’t worth the paper it’s written on.
  • Rehab is for quitters!
  • I am becoming increasingly worried that there isn’t enough anxiety in my life.
  • I have this nagging fear that everyone is out to make me paranoid.
 DIRECT INSTRUCTION

1. Peruse the sight and topics on the left.  They are all REAL unsolved mysteries.
2. Choose an unsolved mystery from any catagory.
3. Read it.
4. On a powerpoint slide, summarize it (who what, when, where, why). Then, since it it still unsolved, make a prediction about what you think happened.
5. Create a visual collage to accompany your summary.  This slide should have at least 6 photos.

Tuesday, January 29, Three Young Men Found Death

Objective: By the end of class, students will read and interpret short story, answer comprehensive questions, identify irony and make real life connections.

DO NOW

--> Have you ever found money laying around anywhere? What did you do with it? Did you take it? Did you try and find the person it belonged to? What would you do?

Direct Instruction

--> Read How the Three Young Men Found Death in the Stories With A Twist book  - pages - 106-112

Guided
Identify the theme/ moral of the story and why it is ironic.  How are the old man's words ironic when he says, "i left Death under a tree  in that grove...." when he knew he left gold there?

Independent
Choose three vocabulary words and write a cohesive paragraph using them.  Be sure to use context clues.

Complete all questions on pages 113-114 - comprehensive through thinking critically. 

Exit Pass 
--> The men in the story were over-confident and greedy.  Do you agree that "GREED CORRUPTS?" Describe a time that greed has caused controversy in your life.

--> What would happen if all of your wishes came true? Do you think this would make you happy? Could having every wish come true ever backfire?What would be your first wish?

Read Those Three Wishes in the Stories with Twist books  - pages

Guided 
--> Choose any five of the 10 vocabulary words on page 100 and write a sentence for each using context clues. You may do this on the NEO with the rest of the independent, comprehensive work below.

Independent
--> Using Neos, complete comprehension, critical thinking, and vocabulary questions relating to the story

DO NOW: We all have fears. When you were a small child, were you afraid of the dark? Did you think there were monsters hiding under your bed, or characters from a scary movie living in your closet?

DIRECT INSTRUCTION: Read "Cemetery Path," p. 3 - 6. 

GUIDED/INDEPENDENT PRACTICE: Complete Reading For Understanding, Responding to Story, Reviewing Vocabulary, and Thinking Critically using a Neo or pencil and paper.  

CLOSURE: Review answers to comprehensive questions.

EXIT PASS: What is your worst fear? Have you ever tried to conqour it?  Why or why not? What happened?

Thursday, January 24, into Thin Air Quiz / project

Objective: By the end of class, students will be assessed on Into Thin Air and complete laptop project in conjunction with the story.

DO NOW

Quick review for quiz.

Direct Instruction

QUIZ - 5 questions - 10 points each - open book.

When you complete your quiz, you will receive a laptop. This project will be extra credit if and when you complete your quiz.

Using powerpoint (or other creative app if you have a better idea) create 2 slides:

1. The first slide should be a summary of the events on Mt. Everest from Into Thin Air. (who, what, when ,where, why).
2. The second slide should be  COLLAGE OF A MINIMUM OF 5 PHOTOS OF Mt. Everest.

Send to me as an attachment so I can print.  Each slide is worth 50 points.

REALIZE THIS IS A 150 POINT DAY SO BE ON TASK!!!!!

Objective:By the end of class, students will read and interpret Into thin Air, identify cause and effect and complete cause / effect essay.

DO NOW




When it was evident that Hansen could not get down the Hillary Step, the team below suggested Hall leave him and save himself.  Hall chose to stay with Hansen.  what would you have done and why?
Direct Instruction

View video of Mount Everest / Hillary Step  - go to desktop

Together, list  all of the mistakes made so far on the 1996 fatal climb.

Complete reading Into thin Air - pages - 359-362.  Addto list of "mistakes" as we read.

Guided 

Choose one of the mistakes (causes) that we listed. Use the graphic organizer to determine all of the effects that occurred from that mistake.

Use the graphic organizer to turn this into a three paragraph cause / effect essay.

Example:

Opening paragraph - Into Thin Air is a true account of the events that occurred on Mount Everest in May 1996. Many bad decisions were made during that climb and 8 people lost their lives. One bad decision that was made was when .........

Paragraph 2 - explain the effects of the bad decision (cause)

Conclusion - suggest other possible outcomes if a different decision (cause) occurred. What may have happened differently?

Objective: By the end of class, students will be able to identify cause / effect and situational irony in text and make real life connections.

DO NOW
If someone offered you $65,000 to lead them into a situation you knew they were not prepared for and could possible get hurt or killed, would you do it? Why or why not? What kind of responsibilities, if any,  do we have to each other as human beings?

Direct Instruction

Continue reading Into Thin Air - pages 357-359.

Guided

1. Identify three examples of cause / effect so far from Into Thin Air.  Then change the cause and predict a new effect for each.

2. Identify 3 examples of situational irony.

Independent

3. Use Double Journal Entry graphic organizer to identify 5 quotes or short passages to which you relate.  Explain the revelance to yourself on the right hand side of the organizer.

 Closure

Review examples of cause/ effect and changes / predictions.  List the examples of situational irony to date.

Read together pages 352 - 355. Answer the following comprehensive questions. 

1. Describe the conditions at the top of Mount Everest and how Krakauer felt when he was up there.  Use at least five adjectives to describe his physical and mental state (page 353).

2. What time and day was it and who was Krakauer with at summit? (page353)

3. What is ironic about the clouds on that day ? page 354

4. How many teams were there climbing Mt Everest on that day? Where were they from? (page 354)

5. What mistake did Harris make with the gas and what was the effect of that mistake (page 355)?  

When Compete you will receive a laptop.

When you receive a laptop, go to my blog and click on the link below. Take the online QUIZ on Mt Everest. Record your results. Then use the detailed information from the quiz answers to write a one page report about what you learned about Mt Everest from taking the quiz.

DO NOW:  
WORD SPLASH -Write down 5 adjectives (descriptive words) and 5 nouns (person, place, thing) that relate to the following photo. 
From the picture and the words you wrote, what do you think this story is going to be about?
 

DIRECT INSTRUCTION:  Introduction to Into Thin Air and its literary devices.  Page 349 – holt text.



GUIDED PRACTICE: Read pages 350-351 in Holt text.  Background on story, climbers, and the region and geography surrounding Mt. Everest.

INDEPENDENT PRACTICE (ON NEOS):  

Make Connections:
1. Tell us something that happened as a direct result of your actions this year. How did you cause it to happen? Was the effect positive or negative and was it the effect you wanted?
2. What is the motivation behind attempting something like scaling Mt. Everest or any other kind of dangerous stunt or feat? Why RISK IT? What is the biggest risk you ever took? Did it turn out the way you expected? WAS IT WORTH IT? 
3. Write down 10 facts you’ve learned on pages 350-351.   Pair with another student to compare and add any facts you may not already have. SPELL CHECK! 
EXIT PASS: In the passage we will begin tomorrow, a leader goes against his own rules and makes a decision that results in devastation. When, if ever, is it OK to go against the rules?

CRQ _ Analyze how the author constructs the argument in the passage.  Use information from the passage to support your analysis.

THEN:

1. Summarize the article.

  2. What is it about human nature that makes people rebel and riot? Examine several riots that we have studied - Kent State, after Juius Caesar's death, MLK, Rodney King....etc.  Did the riots evoke change in society? What was the purpose of the riot and were the people successful in achieving their goal? (was their purpose to bring awareness, change, to mourn, to rebel, was it racial or class driven/)
