Wednesday, November 14, JC ESSAY

Objective: By the end of class, students will write essay according to guidelines and use information and quotes gathered last Friday to help you.

DO NOW

Take out notes and quotes from Friday.  Get a JC book and review directions on blog below and on handout provided.

Direct instruction

Review any directions if necessary, handout neos and monitor progress of essays.

Essay Directions

Choose a topic from the handout provided (two are compare/contrast and two are persuasive). I have provided thesis statements for you for each topic.

Compare / contrast essay:
 Four paragraphs
1. Opening with thesis
2. Paragraph about similarities (use 2 supporting quotes) 
3. Paragraph about differences (use 2 supporting quotes) 
4. conclusion

First determine how they are similar and different (character traits). then, find QUOTES that demonstrate how they are similar and/or different.

Persuasive Essay 

 Five paragraphs - 
1. Opening with thesis 
2. Paragraph about first "reason" as stated in the thesis (1 supportive quote)
3. Paragraph about second reason (use 1 supportive quote) 
4. Paragraph about third reason (use 1 supportive quote)
5. Conclusion

EMPHASIZE THE ELEMENTS OF RUBRIC
Grammar, vocabulary, transitions, # of paragraphs and minimum of 4 sentences per paragraph, effectively used quotes, clearly stated thesis and each paragraph clearly supporting thesis are all critical elements in grading!!! 100 points!
