SYMBOLS & ALLEGORY in Poetry

Read Seven Stages of Man - page 444 PURPLE text

 Shakesspeare

1.  The poem is an extended metaphor that is also an allegory. For what are the actors and the play an allegory (in other words,what do they symbolize)? 

2. . Identify the Seven Stages of Man  - write them in your notes

3.  Match the colors of the rooms from Poe's Masque of the red Death to Shakespeare's seven stages of man.  

In a 5-7 sentence paragraph, explain what each color might represent (for instance, why is birth represented by the color blue?) Do this for each stage.  Use transitional words and go in order 1-7. This is your opinion so don't be afraid to express what you think!!

4. I AM POEM - most of you are familiar with this style of poem. Complete one for yourself on a neo using the guidelines provided. Pay particular attention to using nouns and adjectives in their proper places!!!
