SYMBOLS & ALLEGORY in Poetry

Read Seven Stages of Man - page 444 PURPLE text

 Shakesspeare

1.  The poem is an extended metaphor that is also an allegory. For what are the actors and the play an allegory (in other words,what do they symbolize)

2. . Identify the Seven Stages of Man  - write them in your notes

3.  Match the colors of the rooms from Poe's Masque of the red Death to Shakespeare's seven stages of man.  

In a 5-7 sentence paragraph, explain what each color might represent (for instance, why is birth represented by the color blue?) Do this for each stage.  Use transitional words and go in order 1-7. This is your opinion so don't be afraid to express what you think!!

4. I AM POEM - most of you are familiar with this style of poem. Complete one for yourself on a neo using the guidelines provided. Pay particular attention to using nouns and adjectives in their proper places!!!

Contagion is a noun meaning the spreading of a disease. Contagious is the adjective form of the noun. Use each in a sentence using context clues.  Remember  noun is a THING and an adjective describes a noun.

Objective: By the end of class,students will choose a short story from the soft holt text and begin comprehensive project due Wednesday. Today, the minimum due is numbers 1-3 listed below.

Tumult is a noun meaning chaos . Tulmultuous is the adjective form of th word.  Write a sentence for each form of the word using proper context clues.

The city was in great tumult after the hurricane. (noun)

Exhalation is a noun meaning a breath blown out. Exhale is the verb form of the word. Write a sentence for each form of the word using proper context clues.

Complete handout - BRUTUS protagonist graphic organizer. Te Internal Conflict takes place in ACT 2 and the External Conflict takes place in ACT 5.

Choose a topic from the handout provided. I have provided thesis statements for you for each topic. Today, just brainstorm and find quotes that will support your thesis.  Use a NEO to type your topic and the quotes you will use in each body paragraph to support it. On Tuesday, you will us this quotes to formalize your essay.

1. Caesar was accused of being too ambitious, however, there are many examples that demonstrate that he was not. 

For this essay, today, just find quotes that suggest he was not ambitious.  Places to look include Marc Antony's speech, Caesar's last word to Brutus and when he first agrees to stay home with his wife Calphurnia after her bad dreams.

2. 










In all essays:
 1. Correct grammar / sentence structure  (watch for run on sentences!)
2.  Clear transitions
3.  At least one QUOTE from text in each body paragraph, that acts as evidence to support your thesis.
4. A clear, identifiable thesis statement in the opening paragraph.
5. Spell checked.
6. Double spaced and titled with name and date.

OBJECTIVE: By the end of class, students will analyze a popular persuasive speech by identifying logical and emotional appeals, create a visual persuasive presentation or write an original speech suppoted by logical and emotional appeals.

Friday, November 2, Persuasion

Objective: By the end of class, students will identify logical and emotional appeals of Marc Antony's speech and choose to write an original persuasive speech or  choose one to recite.

DO NOW

What is a logical appeal? It is a reason that is based on fact used in a persuasive argument.
What is an emotional appeal? It appeals to the emotions of others to convince them to agree with you.


Direct Instruction

Analyze Marc Antony's speech.  Identify logical and emotional appeals that convince the people of Rome to support him and Caesar's memory and rebel against the conspirators.

Guided / Independent

YOU HAVE A CHOICE
