Fig Language - (part of the test)

 View https://www.spiral.ac/sharing/m8wvg1n/the-seven-ages-of-man-william-shakespeare
Read and analyze Seven Ages of Man - Shakespeare

It is an extended metaphor - What are the stages of life being compared to??

Stages of life are being compared to ACTS in a PLAY (something Shakespeare knew so well!)
Complete graphic organizer provided according to directions.

Then, in prose form:

Analyze one of the stages of life and explain how the figurative language for this stage influences the reader. Also evaluate how you think Shakespeare felt about this particular stage of life. Use textual evidence to support your answer.

Sentence starters.........

One of the stages of life that Shakespeare analyzes is the ____________________. In this stage, he

uses (name the type of figurative language used)____________________________. He say,

"___________________________________________________________________________."

This helps create the image or idea that

_________________________________________________________________________________

______________________________________________________________________________.

This image is (positive? negative? happy? sad?) so I think that Shakespeare feels

_____________________________________________ about this stage.

Guided / Independent

Peruse the poem and define unknown terms directly on the poem (annotate) using the vocabulary sheet that is provided to you.

Read the first five lines and determine: To what are the seven stages of man being compared?

Shakespeare was most famous for writing plays (dramas) that were either tragedies or comedies. All plays are divided into ACTS and then into smaller SCENES within the ACTS. It only makes sense then, that Shakespeare compares the seven stages of life to seven _________ in a play.

THIS IS THE EXTENDED METAPHOR - STAGES OF LIFE ARE COMPARED TO ACTS IN A PLAY.

Read and Annotate the poem for figurative language.
