ENGLISH 2 Syllabus
2019-2020
COURSE OVERVIEW:
English 2 explores a variety of American Literature in various genres including
fiction, non-fiction, poetry, prose and news reports. This rigorous and challenging course is
designed to improve reading, writing, speaking and critical thinking
skills. In addition to reading and analyzing
different forms of texts, students will evaluate persuasive writing and develop
research based essays to enhance research technology skills and synthesize
information. The course will also emphasize building vocabulary and
standardized test terminology to increase comprehension skills that will enable
students to effectively and confidently approach the Keystone Literature Exams.
AUTHORS MAY INCLUDE: Roald Dahl (fiction), Sandra Cisneros
(fiction), Robert Kennedy, Malcolm X (persuasive speeches), Hanson W. Baldwin
(historical article), Edgar Allan Poe (ficton), Shakespeare (drama), Aldous Huxley (fictional allegory) and a
variety of poetry that will enhance recognition of poetic elements and devices.

Class work 30% 80-89 = B
70-79 = C
Homework 20% 60 -69 = D
Participation 10% Below 60 = F
MATERIALS:
PLEASE be prepared every day when
you come to class. You will need at three-subject notebook (YES, I said 3!) or
binder equivalent and a writing utensil. A folder and highlighter are
recommended as well.
